General information about cookies

Cookies are small text strings (letters and/or numbers) that the sites visited by the user send to the browser, where they are stored to be re-transmitted to the same sites at the next visit by the same user. Cookies are stored by the individual browser on the specific device used (computer, tablet, smartphone, etc.). During navigation on a site, some elements may reside (such as, for example, images, maps, sounds, specific links to pages of other domains) of other sites. In these cases, the user may also receive cookies on his terminal that are sent by the latter (called third party or publisher). If the cookies are sent directly from the site you are visiting, they are called first party.

Similar technologies, such as, for example, web beacons and transparent GIFs can be used to collect information on the user’s behavior and use of services. In the remainder of this document, we will refer to cookies and all similar technologies simply using the term cookie. Cookies are classified based on their purpose, duration, and the site that set them.

Session cookies are temporarily stored in the memory of the device while browsing a site, for example, to keep track of the chosen language or authentication to access restricted areas or similar. Session cookies remain stored on the device for a short period of time. In fact, they are deleted as soon as the user closes the browser. Permanent cookies save a file on the device for a long period of time. This type of cookie has an expiration date. Permanent cookies allow sites to remember information and settings for subsequent visits by the user, thus making exploration more practical and quick, since, for example, it is no longer necessary to log in to a restricted section or similar. On the expiration date, the cookie is automatically deleted when you first access the site that created it.

The legislation requires the owner to provide the user with information on the cookies used by the site and the purposes for which they are used. The objective is threefold: to guarantee privacy, ensure ease of use and optimize the development of the site. The main types of cookies and the related purposes for which they are used by the site are illustrated below.

Technical cookies – Purpose and lawfulness of the processing

Technical cookies are used for the sole purpose of carrying out “… the transmission of a communication over an electronic communications network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide such service“. They are not used for other purposes and are normally installed directly by the owner or manager of the site. Functionality cookies are technical cookies and allow the user to navigate according to a series of selected criteria (for example, the language, the products selected for purchase) in order to improve the service provided. Analytics cookies, when used directly by the site manager to collect information in aggregate and anonymous form on the number of users and how they visit the site, are considered technical cookies.

The user’s personal data are processed by the data controller so that the site functions correctly and provides useful information to the user who visits it. The lawfulness of the processing of personal data is based on the need to pursue the legitimate interest of the controller (article 6.1 letter f) of the Regulation). For the installation of all types of technical cookies, the prior consent of the user is therefore not required.

Disabling, enabling, deleting cookies and their consequences

At any time, the user can limit or block cookies through the browser settings (Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozzilla Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc.).
